How to Tell If Your Weed Delivery in Vancouver Is Actually Legal

After $8M Illicit Cannabis Seizure, BC Consumers Urged to Verify Licensed Delivery Services
British Columbia's Community Safety Unit announced this week that it seized nearly $8 million worth of illicit cannabis from four warehouses in Richmond, Vancouver, and Vernon - the latest in a series of enforcement actions targeting unlicensed cannabis retailers and producers operating in the province. The raids, supported by the Vancouver Police Department and RCMP, bring the CSU's total seizures since 2018 to more than $43.84 million, alongside the disruption of over 1,000 unlicensed websites.
The enforcement action has renewed attention on a persistent problem for consumers: distinguishing licensed cannabis delivery services from unlicensed ones that can look nearly identical online.
A Market Where Licensing Isn't Always Obvious
Cannabis delivery has been legal in British Columbia since July 2021, when the province first authorized licensed retail stores and their employees to deliver directly to consumers, later expanding in July 2022 to allow common carriers as well. But the CSU's ongoing enforcement record - 123 actions and counting - shows unlicensed operators continue to circulate alongside legitimate ones, often with websites and menus that look no different from a licensed retailer's.
"Customers benefit from knowing there is a physical, licensed store behind their order," said a spokesperson for Marigolds Cannabis, a licensed dispensary with storefronts in Gastown and on Davie Street. "When you walk into our Gastown or Davie Street location, you can see the products, speak with staff, and verify exactly who you are buying from. That transparency carries over when we deliver - it is not a different business, it is the same licensed dispensary at your door."
What Consumers Can Check
Under BC's delivery regulations, legal cannabis delivery can only come from a licensed cannabis retail store or an authorized carrier acting on its behalf, to residential addresses, between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m., with valid government-issued ID required from anyone appearing under 19. A listed physical retail address is one baseline signal of legitimacy - something Marigolds Cannabis points to in its own delivery service, which draws from the same regulated inventory stocked at its two Vancouver locations.
Marigolds' delivery network currently covers multiple zones across Metro Vancouver, including Burnaby, UBC, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody, with same-day orders typically fulfilled within a 1-3 hour window.
